TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI – Tuscola County school districts have teamed up with a local charity to raise money for colorectal cancer awareness and education at upcoming school basketball games.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, said Jeff Molby, “team captain” with Savor Every Day, the organization raising money for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life of Tuscola County. Early detection of colon cancer is a personal cause for Molby: His father’s cancer was detected early and successfully treated.
After he met a family who didn’t get so lucky, Molby realized how fortunate his dad had been and is grateful he’s had the time to pay it forward, he said.
“It’s one that’s very, very treatable if you catch it in time,” Molby said. “Because of the stigma and squeamishness, not near enough people get screened in time.”
In a partnership titled “Buckets for Butts,” Savor Every Day will sell $10 raffle tickets to win a vacation package at four school basketball games, starting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28 when Millington Community Schools takes on Unionville-Sebawing Area School District at Millington Jr./Sr. High, located at 8780 Dean Dr. The other participating districts are Caro Community Schools and Cass City Public Schools, with games both held 6 p.m. Thursday, March 3, and Vassar Public Schools, held 6 p.m. Friday, March 4.
The raffle winner will be drawn Monday, April 7, according to Savor Each Day’s website.
Savor Every Day will be at both junior varsity and varsity games each day and will make a speech around halftime or whenever is most appropriate, Molby said. They will provide information to help individuals know when they should get tested and more, he said.
